Don’t Worry, We Have Refills!

We also sat down with Victoria over some refilled glasses of our favorite drinks, and we were delighted to hear about her college experience thus far. She also offered some advice for young females who might be interested in the Mass Comm field. Let’s meet sophomore Victoria Mikula! Cheers to her for striving towards her goals even if it took changing her major once or twice. She is a Mass Communications major at Point Park University. Follow everywhere she and her camera goes on her Instagram!

What is your intended career & what do you want to do with your degree? Why?

VM: I definitely want to work in the media, I’m thinking more something along the lines of magazine, online mixed media between journalism, photography, maybe even video – who knows? I’m kind of exploring all of those options now, especially with a Mass Comm major.

What advice would you give a freshman entering into school with the same goal or similar goal as you?

VM: I would definitely say to stay on top of deadlines and things like that because if you miss a deadline or if you don’t have a set deadline and you keep pushing things, you’re never going to get your work done and you’re just going to be so overwhelmed once it hits finals week you are pretty much – done!

Have you had internships, shadowing, temp or any opportunities in your field thus far? If so, what?

VM: Last summer I interned at a Photography studio in Carlisle, PA.  I also was a photographer at an amusement park for a few years, and I currently work for Enrollment Marketing at Point Park where I do reporting and photography for them. I also have an internship coming up this summer with Pittsburgh Articulate which is an online arts magazine. I’ve had a lot of opportunities, you just have to apply apply apply. You’re going to get shot down sometimes but you just got to stay on it and keep going.

Do you think it was beneficial to what you intend to do after graduation? Why or why not?

VM: My internship at the Photo Studio made me realize that’s not really what I want to do. On the other hand, my apprenticeship here with Enrollment Marketing has shown that I’m interested in other forms of the realm of communications like marketing and reporting and things like that.

What extracurriculars do you have? What is your position in them? Why did you decide to get involved?

VM: I am the Campus Correspondent for Her Campus at Point Park. I got involved because I had a friend who was a couple years older than me who was doing Her Campus at her school, so I would read her articles when I was in high school and it seemed like a really cool thing that she was doing. When our founder Casey was trying to bring Her Campus to Point Park, I was like I need to get involved in this and then I moved up on to being the CC (our Presidential position). I really just loved it. I’m basically doing what I want to do with my entire life right now at a small scale. I get to oversee a staff of 25 writers, I get to write my own articles, I get to edit people’s things, I get to photograph and do all kinds of that I really like to do.
